Egis Lagan introduces Ireland’s first Volvo FM Low Entry electric truck
Egis Lagan Services has added Ireland’s first Volvo FM Low Entry electric truck to its motorway maintenance fleet, marking a major step towards cleaner and safer road operations.
The new zero tailpipe emission vehicle will serve as an impact protection truck under the company’s contract with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for maintenance work on the M8. Designed for urban and motorway environments, the battery-electric FM Low Entry combines near-silent operation with enhanced safety, boasting a five-star Direct Vision Standard rating for superior driver visibility.
After testing electric trucks from multiple manufacturers, Egis Lagan selected Volvo as the “clear winner” for efficiency and performance. The 4x2 model is equipped with four traction batteries totalling 360 kWh, allowing it to handle demanding maintenance routes while charging between shifts at the firm’s Cahir depot. A flat-bed body from Swords Auto, complete with rear crash cushion, supports its traffic management duties.
Peter Csabai, Egis Lagan’s winter service and maintenance manager, said the vehicle will play a key role in supporting TII’s sustainability and carbon reduction targets in line with Ireland’s Climate Action Plan. The truck is expected to remain in service for up to 15 years, replacing a diesel model and cutting associated emissions.
Supplied by McCarthy Commercials, the vehicle features Volvo Dynamic Steering for smoother control, a flexible crew cab for up to three passengers, and a five-year Volvo Gold Contract that guarantees battery performance and long-term reliability.
