BWG Foods drives Ireland’s logistics into a greener future with electric HGV debut
BWG Foods has unveiled Ireland’s first long-haul fully electric Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV), the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, marking a major leap in the country’s sustainable transport landscape. The launch, held at BWG’s National Distribution Centre in Kilcarbery, was attended by Minister of State Seán Canney, along with representatives from Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) and Masterlink.
The new eActros 600 can travel over 500 kilometres on a single charge and is powered by advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology. Built for heavy freight demands, it offers a cleaner, quieter alternative to diesel fleets without compromising range or efficiency.
For BWG Foods, one of Ireland’s largest retail and wholesale groups serving over 1,000 stores, the addition of the eActros 600 reflects a clear strategy to embed sustainability into its logistics operations. The move is supported by the government’s Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicle (ZEHDV) Purchase Grant, aligning corporate investment with Ireland’s national climate goals.
Minister Canney praised the initiative as a milestone for the transport sector, while BWG’s Chief Wholesale and Logistics Officer, Michael Collins, called it a “transformational step” toward practical long-haul electric freight. Masterlink CEO John O’Regan echoed this sentiment, highlighting the vehicle’s performance and reliability as a strong signal of progress for logistics operators across the country.
As the logistics and transport industry faces mounting pressure to decarbonise, BWG Foods’ latest move shows that sustainable innovation and operational excellence can go hand in hand.
